PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT:

ATTRIBUTES

Flexability and Adaptability

Having worked in various school settings now as a teacher and as an LSA in the past, allowed me to develop the skill of flexability and adaptability as I have to collaborate with various teachers, each with their own teaching style and values. Every student is different in their learning needs, abilities and styles and thus flexability in accessing curriculum is an essential skill in the education context. In addition, my professional placements have been varied: various year groups- early childhood to the middle school, various needs and abilities- high support needs to gifted and talented, various backgrounds- faith based catholic school, super schools, small primary school, with students from diverse cultures, needs and socio economic backgrounds. Each of these instances have required a high degree of  quick, efficient and effective flexability and adaptability.

Passionate commitment to teaching and learning, ethical behaviour and responsibility

I am passionately committed to the profession of teaching and endeavour to be a lifelong learner myself. I realise that we are in an education context that is within a changing paradigm and requires educators to skill students for a a world that is yet to unfold, problems that are yet to be discovered and solutions that require critical, creative, innovative and problem solving thought. I endeavour to consistently display ethical behaviour, responsibility, respect and integrity as these are my personal values and are a part of my humanistic philosophies. I will continue to be a life long learner myself so as to be the best possible facilitator of an education that students require to be sucessful learners, active and informed citizens of the future.

Resilience and capacity to respond positively to change

Having worked in the special needs context for several years, there have been stressful instances that required active communication, collaboration with teachers, other staff and parents and deescalation of volatile situations. I tend to reflect on these instances as learning experiences and analyse what worked and what was not constructive in those instances. These situation have assisted in the development of resilience. In addition, I realise that we are in an unprecedented era of change and thus have taken to actively learn the technologies associated with the smooth functioning of systems within the contemporary education context. I personally view change as progress, however, I still apply critical thinking when I adopt change in my teaching practice so as not to create barriers for my students. An example of this was that when setting a web based project for my students, I ensured that there was enough class time with access to computers and the internet as I realise that not everyone has access to technology at home and if it was homework based, the project would become an invalid  and unfair assessment.

Active engagement in profession, school and wider community

Throughout my working career as teacher and an LSA and my my preservice years, I have engaged in various initiatives including fundraising for Autism Awareness through involvement in a 'Blue day' at school, producing information brochures to increase Autism awareness and running a staff well being cooking session in the school kitchens in conjunction with the pastrol care team. The buttons above will link to these initiatives and instances of active engagement in the school community. I also continue to build professional networks and increase my PLN through my twitter account. I also maintain Pinterst pages to collect resources and ideas and a Scoopit curation site where by insights connecting internet teaching resources to curricular are organised.
