Lead initiatives and awards

ACARA GENERAL CAPABILITIES PROJECT:

In May 2017 I was selected to attend a two day workshop and project run by ACARA. As part of this initiative, I designed a unit of work based on English and three general capabilities- Personal and social competencies, ethical understanding and critical thinking. This unit of work and its related work samples is to be published on the ACARA website by the end of the year.

MENTORING:

Over the past four years, I have been mentoring new educators and have provided support and guidance with reference to behaviour management through positive supports, SEL resources, creating a safe and supportive environment and preparation for full TQI registration. I continue to provide practical on the ground support as well as de brief sessions for maintaining teacher well being.  I continue to mentor  team members in  relation to positive behaviour supports, relationship building in the context of special needs as well as  programming in the context of Disability Education. In addition, over the past two years I have also mentored students from CIT as well as students in college completing their work experience.

COLLABORATION AND NETWORKING EVENTS:

Over the past two years I have been hosting LSU networking and collaborative learning events at my LSU. Some of these sessions have been attended by LSU staff across ACT. I have presented our Grief and Loss SEL programs, how I conducted a critical analysis of our literacy program and embedded  synthetic phonics, our planning & programming practices and templates and our smooth transition systems between the LSU's. Inclusion models with the main stream classes and adapting PLs to meet our contextual needs have been other areas that I have shared with wider networks.

I also collaborate with teachers across the school to co-teach social skills and culture specific lessons. Teachers bring their classes to my LSU for these programs.

I have been able to expand my professional path by taking on some lead initiatives .

ORGANISING AND RUNNING WHOLE SCHOOL EVENTS:

I have been responsible for organising three across the school events. This required event planning and coordination, notes and risk assessments as well as taking the students into the community to represent our school.

ACT Science Fair- For the past two years I have organised for the Primary LSU to participate in the Science Fair. This has included entry registration, delivery, event attendance at CSIRO . It includes communicating to parents regarding the award ceremony and organising an excursion to Questacon with the prize money.

I have also been responsible for organising and planning attendance at the ANZAC Peace ceremony in collaboration with the Woden RSL. Students from the primary leadership inspire team attended last year and this year both the primary and secondary LSUs represented and laid a wreath on behalf of our school.

With another teacher, I have been responsible for organising the Rostrum Public Speaking Competition at our school. For the past two years we have also hosted a Quarter final inviting the surrounding schools. I have co-assisted the event planning and management of this event.

I am also responsible for the Community mentoring program which links the VIEW club and Smith family to the Primary LSU. Community members and the students build strong relationships through the Chief Ministers Reading Program and Art programs.

AWARDS:

In 2019 I was a finalist at the ACT Public Education Awards for Primary School Teacher of the Year. I was nominated by school staff for this award. I was also a stage two finalist for the NEITA- National Excellence in Teaching Awards towards the end of 2019. I was nominated by a parent of one of my students for this award.

CREATING SYSTEMS, TEMPLATES AND ENSURING ALIGNMENT:

In the Primary LSU which comprises of two seperate age cohort classes, I have created systems that ensure alignment between curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting. I have developed scope and sequence templates as well as a summative reporting template that meets the needs of the contextual needs of that cohort as well as fulfils the disability standards requirements.
